The numbers behind the choice
Molybdenum melts at 2620 C, keeps useful strength where most metals have failed, conducts heat well (around 140 W/m-K) and expands little when heated. In vacuum it has a low vapor pressure, so it does not contaminate the furnace.
Where it is used
- Heating elements and heat shields
- Hot-zone structures, rails and supports
- Boats, trays and crucibles for sintering
- Furnace fasteners that must hold at temperature
Practical benefit
Parts last longer, hold shape under load and keep the furnace atmosphere clean, lowering cost per firing over the life of the equipment.
