Head to head
Tungsten melts higher (3422 C vs 2620 C) and is denser, which suits the very hottest zones and radiation shielding. Molybdenum is about half the density, far easier to machine, and lower cost, which makes it the practical pick for most furnace and glass work.
How to choose
- Above ~1700 C continuous, or for maximum density: tungsten
- Glass melting, vacuum furnaces, general high-temp parts: molybdenum
- Complex machined shapes on a budget: molybdenum
