Start with current
The safe current density for molybdenum in glass is limited; too much current per unit area overheats and erodes the electrode. Larger diameters carry more current and last longer, but cost more and intrude further into the tank.
A simple approach
- Work out total furnace power and number of electrodes
- Find the current per electrode
- Pick a diameter that keeps current density in the safe range
- Add margin for service life
Common sizes
